Errant Arts

For those who want something a little different, who love pictures from an unexpected perspective or using unorthodox methods.

My Story

Brought up in Pinhoe near Exeter, from a small child I always wanted to do Art as a profession, always drawing just about anything and everything around me.

Plans to study Fine Art at Art College failed with a rejected application, so I unfortunately had to go out and get a ‘proper’ job.

But my love of art continued to manifest itself in models, drawings and paintings related to my other interests: Sci-Fi & Fantasy; History; Sports; Family

Somewhere along the way I found photography and was introduced to digital editing of drawings and photos.

I don’t see taking photos as a quick, ‘cheap’ way to create art but simply as another artistic medium. I always bear in mind the lessons from my youth, composition, lighting, drama and attempting to capture the story, the moment.

When my kids took up a rugby ball it was natural to take pictures of their games. Then as Manager of Girls’ Rugby I found it important in the promotion and growth of the Girls’ game in Ivybridge.

After leaving the role I continued to photograph my kids’ rugby, and worked with Plymouth Albion Colts and Totnes Colts teams. I found myself being asked by people if I was professional, and if not, why? After a while I thought “actually, why not?”

So it starts with rugby. I’m now the Club Photographer for Totnes RFC, taking pictures for match-day reports, social media and other projects as they need me.

Although as you will see there’s so much more to my photography – my art – and hope you enjoy all my other work too.

Most of the work here is available to purchase as digital downloads, perfect to share with your friends and family on your social media and group chats.

So Why Errant Arts?

There are other meanings but this one suits me fine. You can't put me or my work in a box.

My foundations are from the formal Art & Design education of my school days, but for everything else I'm self-taught or have learnt from others, taken what suits and discarded the rest.

I do things how I want to, using whatever tools and methods that suit the situation, or just because that's how I find it easiest.

I'm not one to follow a path set for me. I stray from the traditional or expected, and will often do things differently in spite.

I love what I do and will do it my own special way.

The Future

I will continue to showcase my work, adding more to my portfolio, and I’m hoping to be able to offer more event and sports photography photoshoots, although this will depend on time constraints and the growth of Errant Arts.
